Little Steps
In Class 10, developing life skills is an important part of our curriculum. We learn life skills to help increase independence at home, at school and in the community. By introducing these skills early and building block by block, we can gain the tools that will allow us to increase self-esteem and lead to more happiness in all areas of life.
This half term, to develop these skills, we have been talking trips out in to the community, checking out the local roads and shops!
Our first trip out was during road safety week – the perfect opportunity to head out and test how safe we could be on the roads outside school. We introduced the “safe” and “unsafe” vocabulary, signs and symbols throughout the week then put them to use on the Friday. Class 10 checked roads carefully before making a decision on whether the road was safe enough to cross. We returned to school safely! Well done Class 10!
For the next couple of weeks, we built up to walking to Asda. First, we walked down and once we had mastered that, we went inside for some shopping too. We took a symbol shopping list and ticked off what we needed to buy while we were there. Then we headed to the till where our shopping was scanned, bagged and paid for! We are getting pretty good at shopping now!
To make our shopping trips worthwhile and meaningful, we have always put our purchases to good use. We have made snowmen biscuits, reindeer toast and strawberry Santa’s (all very festive too). Next half term, we aim to visit the metro station and maybe go on the metro somewhere too!
