Everybody learns, everybody cares

Hat's Snow-business!

This half-term, Class One have enjoyed some wonderful experiences, enriching our learning with stories, art, play and an exciting trip out.

We have delved into some brilliant books, expanding our experiences through storytelling. Our focus book this half term has been ‘I Want My Hat Back’ by Jon Klassen, which the children loved! We learned about characterisation and the children particularly loved the suspicious character of Rabbit. We have learned to use questions, write lists, use describing words and the children have written a story called ‘I Want My Friend Back’.  We’ve also explored some Christmassy and wintry books, such as ‘The Snowman’ by Raymond Briggs, which we used to write some instructions: How to Build a Snowman. We love reading books by brilliant authors and using the tools that we pick up in our own writing. Our daily story time is one of the best parts of the day!

We are putting so much work into our word reading and phonics and the children are making incredible progress with their reading.

Our Maths learning is taking us in many exciting directions; the children have learned a fantastic new skill of telling the time this half term! We have learned how to use the hour hand to tell the time to o’clock and half past. We have also learned about 2D and 3D shapes and their properties, making some beautiful Christmas cards with some of the shapes we know. We are continuing our learning about number and the children have gained a deep understanding of odd and even numbers, counting to 20/50/100 as well as other brilliant life skills such as using different methods to add and subtract.

Our Topic lessons have been fun and engaging; we have become historians and used different skills to find out about how life has changed for children. We even visited a local care home, Marigold Court, to find out all about the residents’ childhoods. In RE, we have learned all about the Christmas story and the origins of Christmas. We are continuing our discovery learning about seasonal changes in Science as well as learning about everyday materials. We had a fun inquiry where we used different types of spoons to eat jelly, then evaluated which material was best! In Art, we have embarked on an exciting adventure to learn to draw and create spirals. We have made: spiral snails, spiral snowmen and fantastic spiral drawings!

Last, but not least, the children have taken part in a magical production where they sing some beautiful songs and use their jazzy dancing skills. We definitely have some future stage stars in Class One!
