Around the World in 80 Days
What a fantastic half term we have had in Class 8! We have enjoyed our learning in class about our new topic, Around the World in 80 Days!
In Maths, we have been using our times tables knowledge to solve division problems. We have learnt all about sharing equally and sometimes having a remainder. We have now moved on to money. We have looked at the value of each UK coin and sequenced them according to their value.
We enjoyed the money number challenges on World Number Day too!
In Literacy, we have been looking at different stories from around the world. We started looking at ‘Snow White in New York’ by Fiona French. We loved this version and how wicked the step mother was to poor Snow white. Next, we moved on to China where we read ‘The willow Pattern Story’ and ‘The Great Race.’ The Great Race taught us all about Chinese New Year and how each year was named after an animal.
On our travels around the world, we have been making and trying different food. We have made Pupusa from El Salvador, and have tried noodles, rice, chicken and prawn toast from China. We loved the Pupusa, especially when we added in cheese!
In Science we have looked at the habitats of different animals around the world. We used our scientific knowledge to help us sort the animals in the different continents. We even sorted them by the food they eat. There were a lot of carnivorous animals, but we liked omnivores the best as their diet resembled some of our diets.
A group of children from class 8 took part in a Sportability Boccia competition. They showed excellent teamwork whilst playing, and great sportsmanship by shaking hands with their opponents at the end of each match. The team won 7 out of the 9 sets they played and have already started training for the competition next year. Will we have a future Boccia Olympian on our team?
We have ended our half term with a fabulous trip to The Centre for Life in Newcastle. We travelled there on the Metro and enjoyed seeing all the different zones where we could use our imaginative iguana and curious camel supper learning powers. What excellent scientists we are!
What parts of the world will we discover next half term we wonder?
