Bede Community Primary School

Everybody learns, everybody cares

ARMS Unit

Bede's Additional Resourced Mainstream School (ARMS) provision provides support to children who may struggle with the dynamics and challenge of a mainstream classroom. Our classes, which have a capacity of 8 children, are calm, engaging and comfortable learning spaces. Children have their own personalised area which enables them to concentrate, develop positive behaviour for learning and boost their self-esteem.

We believe in provision of the same high-quality learning opportunities, teaching and facilities for all, whilst rigorously tailoring learning to meet the distinctive needs of each pupil.

We pride ourselves in being able to identify children needing specialist support within the mainstream school and are able to offer a temporary assessment placement, whilst evaluating their abilities for an Education, Health and Care Plan (EHCP). When we feel that a child is ready,  we endeavour to reintegrate children into their mainstream setting; initially with support and then this support is gradually reduced. Most children are referred to us via the SEND panel. I will then observe them in their setting to ensure we can meet their complex needs in our provisions.

 Our Daily Routine

During the mornings, the children engage in fun-filled literacy and numeracy lessons based on their individualised programmes of study. With the high staff to pupil ratio, children are able to take risks and make mistakes in a way in which minimises the anxieties that can happen in a mainstream setting.

During the afternoon sessions, we spend time focussing on developing social and communication skills, allowing the children to discuss their feelings in small groups. Drawing, mindfulness, play and Lego therapy are also used regularly, to further develop communication skills and aid the pupils towards discussing their feelings in more depth.

Class 7

In class 7 we endeavour to teach to the child’s strengths; the children benefit from short, focussed, adult led tasks where their learning is supported and scaffolded. Children are also encouraged to develop their independence and a ‘can do’ approach.  Each day provides opportunities for group discussion, turn taking and physical development as these are areas where all children benefit.  The children are also provided with opportunities for unstructured play and outdoor learning where they can play alone or with a friend and develop the skills that are taught that day.
